DEFINITION

[L:141] "A definition is a sufficiently distinct and delimited [precise] concept". Definitions are the sole "logically complete and perfect" concepts, and are opposed to exposition and description as "means of developing the logical perfection of cognition". Types of definitions distinguished by Kant include analytic, synthetic, nominal, and real. Kant holds that empirical concepts cannot be defined because their synthesis "can never be complete, for in experience ever new characteristics of the concept can be discovered".
