Abelard, Peter
(1079-1142) French scholastic philosopher and theologian; known for his moral-influence theory of the atonement which states that Christ's death demonstrates divine love which moves man to turn to God; persecuted by Bernard of Clairvaux for alleged heresy; remembered for his romantic love affair with Heloise recorded in their love letters. Wrote 1. Sic Et Non, 2. Christian Theology, and 3. Story of Misfortunes. Said "Nothing is to be believed until it is understood."
